Avery Ferrell, Fort Wayne Honored Hero
Hello, my name is Avery Ferrell and I have Crohn's Disease. I am 13 years old and in the 7th grade. I compete in both show choir and dance. I have a fascination with Harry Potter! I love to create and edit videos on my YouTube channel, SimplyMeAvery. I also like to draw and design pictures and write short stories.
I started having symptoms in February 2015. After a few months of trouble shooting with my pediatrician, blood work indicated problems that sent us directly to a Pediatric GI at Riley. My doctor was very aggressive and quick to test, diagnose, and develop the course of treatment. The testing process was very difficult with blood draws, sedation, scopes, lengthy clinic visits - but I was determined to feel better. I didn't realize how badly I felt or how sick I was until I started to heal. Within four months, I was in remission, according to my blood work. I have not had serious symptoms since starting my treatment. Every now and then, my stomach will be irritated by something I ate. Usually, I can eat anything in moderation - even things on the "no" list for IBD. I only take oral medications and I have never had surgery - I know I am lucky compared to some with IBD. When there is a cure, I will not have to worry about pain from eating. Luckily, I don't have that symptom often, but it will be great not to have to think about it all the time.
