  • Introducing our 2017 Honored Hero:

    Bill Schroeder

    Me and Carter.jpg

My name is Bill Schroeder and I am 25 years old. I currently work for Mueller Local in Marshfield as an Advertising Specialist. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire with a degree in Marketing. My wife, Claire, my son Carter, and myself live in Marshfield and recently just bought our first home. We enjoy sports, running, and pretty much anything outside. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis when I was a senior in high school. It happened out of the blue and my world has changed ever since. While I was originally diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, I was re-diagnosed with Crohn's diease during my freshment year of college. During that time my Crohn's was very active and my life was turned upside down. I went from being 230 pounds to 157 lbs in the course of two months. I've been lucky enough to avoid being that sick again however it gave me a new understanding of the impact Crohn's can have on my life.

While Crohn's is obviously a terrible disease there have been some great things that have come from it. The biggest thing is if it weren't for Crohn's disease I never would have met my wife. Being in the hospital and missing school for almost two months, my grades were not pretty. Because of this, I transfered to University Wisconsin Marshfield/Wood County where I spent two years getting my Associates Degree and raising my grades. This is where I met my wife and most of my best friends. Crohn's has also been the subject of many stories that have gotten a lot of laughs. Most of my family knows that I always carry a 5 gallon pail, garbage bags, and toilet paper in case a gas station or bathroom isn't near. Last year for Christmas my aunt got me Doggie Bags just in case I wasn't near my pail! Crohn's disease has allowed me to have a sense of humor and never take anything to seriously.

I look forward to the day when I never have to worry about Crohn's or colitis again, but every second and every dollar spent towards finding a cure is a second and dollar well spent. I know the impact this disease can have on someone's life and I know how difficult life can be, so if anyone needs someone to talk to feel free to come up to me on Walk Day! I'm thankful for this opportunity to be the Wausau Honored Hero, and if anyone needs someone to talk to I'd be glad to listen.

  • Volunteer

Thousands of volunteers have helped the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) work toward our mission to find cures for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases. Without our volunteers, we would not be able to provide a high level of support, education, research, and resources to our IBD community.
