Sani's Story, as told by her mother, Yovonda:

Now 11, Sani was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in the Summer of 2015 at the age of 9. One night, after suffering with abdominal pains for 3 weeks, she came to me crying in pain - her stomach was hurting again. I decided to take her to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital - I knew something was wrong with my child. After an x-ray, which came back inconclusive due to the backup of stool in her colon, doctors performed a CT Scan, with and without dye. The results came back: Sani had appendicitis.   Emergency surgery was performed to remove her appendix and after an overnight stay to montor her, we were sent home. I remember it was a Friday. I remember this day because, while on the way home from the hospital, we received the life-altering diagnosis: Sani's appendix showed signs of Crohn's disease. I had no clue what this disease was, the only thing that registered to me was my baby had a disease that was not curable. The next week we went to see Dr. Moulton who, after a few tests, confirmed the diagnosis: she officially had Crohn's disease.

We are now adjusting to life with a chronic illness. As with most patients, figuring out the best treatment is trial and error. Sani still hasn't realized how serious this disease is but I talk with her often about her disease so that she can try and understand what she is dealing with.

We hope that, through programs like Take Steps, a cure will be found for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis so that she won’t have to battle this for the rest of her life.

Thousands of volunteers have helped the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation work toward our mission to find cures for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases. Without our volunteers, we would not be able to provide a high level of support, education, research, and resources to our IBD community.
