  • Meet Amy Adamy, Take Steps Lansing's Honored Hero

    In 2009, I started having digestive problems no one was able to explain—a week that February is burned into my memory as “Hospital Week,” and somedays it feels I’ve been fighting against my own body ever since.

    There were a handful of doctors along the way; some who told me I was making it up or that I had an eating disorder, one who told my 19-year-old self, alone in a cold and sterile office I had cancer, and another who stretched beyond his professionalism.

    I was a college athlete and otherwise healthy. So when I was suddenly having a hard time finishing a practice, I was just as frustrated and confused as my team and coach.

    It took until October 2011, three colonoscopies, two upper endoscopies, a capsule swallow, countless MRIs, x-rays and CT scans to finally find a doctor I trusted and get a diagnosis: ulcerative pan-colitis (UC). Finally, a sigh of relief finally having an answer. Now to cope and deal with it, because despite having lived with it for almost two years, I had never heard of it.
