When I was in the 5th grade, I was an 11 year old who really cared about what my peers thought of me. This was normal for girls my age. There were rumors going around school that I had an eating disorder because I was so thin. I couldn't blame them for their stares: I was a 69 pound girl for over two years. As I continued to grow taller, the scale remained the same. I would eat so much in order to gain weight, but would immediately get sick and run to the bathroom. When I reflect on my childhood and ask my mom, "How sick was I?" - she reminds me that I frequently crawled up in a ball on the kitchen floor, crying in pain, but refusing to stay home from school.

While I remember my doctor's facial expression and the tone in her voice when I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, I particularly remember the list of foods that she told me I could no longer eat, including my all-time favorite snack: popcorn. I immediately burst into tears. She continued to list the medications I would need to start taking - upwards of 20 pills a day.

Despite all this, I consider myself fortunate - thanks to the advancements of The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation - there are many medication options available for patients and the meds I started taking when I was first diagnosed are still effective for me 13 years later. My battles have included liquid diets, occasional steriods, blood tests and extensive diagnostic scans, but I am fully aware that my fight against Crohn's has been relatively easy compared to others. Since I was 11, I have been telling myself, "I will not give up, I will fight this, and I will win!"

My family and I have spent the summers in Ocean City my entire life and learned about the Guts & Glory 5K two years after my diagnosis. My parents, who are my biggest supporters and cheerleaders, immediately registered our family and decided to sponsor the event. This year will be the 12th year for TEAM ASHLYNN and to date we have raised $50,000 towards the mission of The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. My family looks forward to this event all year - we hope that you will help us - we will not give up, we will continue to fight, and we will find cures!
