It all started in my 20's. In college, when most of my friends were going to parties and enjoying the college life, I found myself often sick in bed. I had no energy. I wasn't able to eat or drink anything without suffering from severe stomach pains. My joints ached. I dropped to 100 pounds and found myself going to the bathroom up to 20 times a day. It was then that I was taken to the hospital and finally diagnosed with Crohn's disease.

The hardest obstacle I had to overcome while suffering with this disease happened during my pregnancy. In my 5th month of pregnancy with my first child, I started passing out. I had severe pains in my chest and had a difficut time breathing. After several hospital stays, the doctors decided I needed to have open lung surgery. Incredibly dangerous for me and the unbord child. At that point, I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in the lung. This "gut" disease had manifested to the lungs. Incredibly rare, but it does happen. I was the first woman on medical record ever to have Crohn's in the lung while pregnant. I was put on 80 mg of steriods, along with many other drugs.

I've since been on almost every drug on the market, and I'm sadly running out of options. Remicade helped me the last 6 years, but unfortunately my body has created antibodies against the drug. This is why I need a cure. Without a cure, surgery is likely in my future. I'm lucky though...so many suffering with this disease have it much worse than me. So many have gone through several surgeries, constantly suffering.

My husband created Team 4 Mer 10 years ago in hopes of raising a little money for a cure. Since then, we have grown from a team of 2, to a team of 100+! We have raised over $130,000.

Crohn's and ulcerative colitis are tricky. They are silent. They are diseases nobody can see. I have several friends with IBD, an uncle with this disease, and a cousin who passed away at the age of 46 due to complications of this disease. We need to find a cure. Let's continue the fight, together.
