Meet your 2013 Honored Hero: Ashton Rosin

Hi there! My name is Ashton Rosin and I am currently a third year student studying International Development with a minor in Disability studies at UCLA. I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease at the age of ten. After arriving at the Emergency Room almost a year after the pain began, my mom gently told me that I had a disease. As a ten year old, I didn’t know what to think or how to feel. I have been very involved in the IBD community ever since and later came to learn from my mom, that she too, had Crohn’s Disease.
My days have consisted of fears of restaurants, because every food seemed to cause pain. The empty feeling that arises when most doctors have nothing to say about your situation because medication after medication doesn’t seem to work. Some days are so unsettling that I’m not sure if I am going to make it through my class because I am shivering despite the three sweatshirts I have worn in an attempt to keep warm. Many days are troubled by a consistent fear of the unknown. Will today be a good day?
However, I have promised myself that Crohn’s would always be part of my definition, but I would never let it define me.
You can triumph just as I have set out to do. It is exhilarating to share my story. My story which includes successfully returning to competitive gymnastics, despite my circumstances. My magical days spent at CCFA’s Camp Oasis where I learned how to give myself an injection and would attempt to win the race to swallow more pills than my friend. My opportunity to advocate on behalf of college students across the nation with the CCFA’s National Collegiate Council of Leaders or run my own support group on campus at UCLA.
I recognize how lucky I am because I have been afforded the opportunities to empower myself through the unparalleled love and support of my family, my friends, and the CCFA, by knowing that it’s okay to take it one day at a time.
I value the ability to share my story in the hope that it will touch just one person who can relate and maybe even inspire someone else’s journey to empowerment. I am honored and humbled to be a part of the CCFA and Take Steps family.
And I stand here today to remind you that despite everything you go through, you are not alone.
