Take Steps, say hello to your 2014 Honored Hero, BJ Wenzel!

BJ is a friendly and engaging young person. He has the confidence and the ability to do a hip-hop dance routine or be a captain of his sports team or publically speak about his medical struggles.  He brings a great sense of humor and sincerity to everything he does. He knows Crohn’s disease is just one piece of him. Whether he hopes to be a professional athlete, an artist, a lawyer or a newscaster, having Crohn’s disease isn’t going to stop him.
He believes in himself, he’s got Confidence.

Last year, when he joined hundreds of kids at Camp Oasis for the first time, he really enjoyed tubing with new friends, telling jokes by the campfire, playing sports and dancing at the parties. What he learned during this wonderful opportunity was that everyone who has Crohn’s is impacted in a different way.  BJ learned that sharing his experiences and listening to others helps him deal with his challenges and usually helps someone.
Here at CCFA, we call that Character.

This kid is special, but not because he excels at sports or is accepting of other kids.  This well-rounded, out-going kid is special because he suffers from a chronic illness, one that has caused him to miss more than a year of school in his short life. A disease that can make routine activities like spending time at a friends house or going away to camp scary and intimidating.  This disease may cause BJ pain and discomfort but he shows up to everything with optimism and hope to make the most out of each and every day.
No doubt, this kid is Fearless.

When we approached BJ to serve in this role, he didn’t hesitate for one second. Before the sentence was out of my mouth, he grinned ear to ear and said, YES! This is a kid who is willing to tell the world his story without fear, without embarrassment, without pause and he’s going to do it all with just a hint of swagger.  BJ welcomes the opportunity to help in any way possible, to try to find a cure, and to help someone else impacted by this disease.
He’s got a positive Attitude.

Confidence, Character, Fearless, Attitude. These four words truly summarize what it means to be an Honored Hero at CCFA. I am so pleased to add his name to the incredible list of past recipients of this honor as we continue the tradition of telling the world we will not be held back, pushed down, or stifled by these diseases and together, we are going to find a CURE!
