Dr. David T. Rubin, Distinguished Physician
research into the possible links between genetics and IBD has special meaning
for Dr. David Rubin, 2012 Distinguished Physician. As a first-year medical
student, he found out that his Grandma Pearl had Crohn’s disease. When she
credited Dr. Joseph Kirsner with saving her life, Dr. Rubin decided to devote
his career to IBD. Dr. Kirsner became his mentor.
Dr. Rubin is professor of Medicine and co-director of the Inflammatory Bowel
Disease Center at University of Chicago Medicine. He specializes in digestive
diseases and performs clinical research related to outcomes in IBD.
Dr. Rubin’s efforts for both CCFA (national) and the Illinois Carol Fisher
Chapter have been extraordinary. He has been regional course director for the
Illinois CCFA Education Symposium, where he is also a frequent presenter. He is
currently co-chair of the CCFA National Membership Committee.
To show support for his patients and help raise funds for IBD research, Dr.
Rubin was a Team Challenge runner recently, managing to bring in nearly twice
the amount he committed to raise.
Earlier this year, Dr. Rubin received the CCFA’s Rosenthal Award, a national
leadership award bestowed upon a volunteer who has contributed in an
indisputable way to the quality of life of patients and families. Dr. Rubin has
held several leadership positions with CCFA.
He is the editor of the best-selling book, Curbside Consultation in IBD: 49
Clinical Questions and you can follow him on Twitter @IBDMD.
|Kyle Drexler, Inspirational Youth
Drexler, the 2012 Inspirational Youth, joined the ranks of CCFA
volunteers shortly after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at age
6. Instead of being defeated by IBD, Kyle and his parents saw that CCFA
would give him the power to share his story and to make a difference.
story includes months of unimaginable pain, five hospitalizations and a
determined spirit. With a hero's attitude, Kyle has survived his
challenges and continues to share his experiences with others hoping to
raise awareness and find a cure.
Team Challenge honoree for numerous seasons, Kyle made a heartfelt
video thanking all who consider joining Team Challenge and created
inspirational drawings that help keep the runners focused on the
mission. His amazing smile can be seen frequently at training runs and
he completes his own fund raising yearly with Take Steps.
This year, Kyle will be a 6th grader at Hadley Junior High in Glen Ellyn.
Kyle continues to manage his colitis, CCFA is like a family, a source
of amazing friends who have shared countless stories of strength and
