Chapter Director’s Note
I want to thank you for taking the time to read our chapter e-newsletter. I am so grateful for your ongoing support of CCFA as well as the time and attention you put into reading our monthly updates - for I realize that you all lead busy lives with a great many personal and professional responsibilities. I can only imagine the corresponding number of emails you each receive every month, week, and day – related to other charitable organizations you support, political causes, your children’s schools, professional associations, family, and friends. I want to make it easier for you and all of our constituents across Northeast Ohio to recognize our monthly e-newsletter so that it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle; unopened because it’s not clear the message is from your local chapter, or worse yet, left to rot away in your junk mail folder.
And so, we are inviting YOU to name the Northeast Ohio Chapter’s monthly e-newsletter, which goes out to 8,400+ people. Please send all idea submissions to Terri, email@example.com by the close of business on October 13th. Staff will select the winning name, to be rolled out in the October issue. The contest winner will receive a CCFA workout towel and the opportunity to write a guest column in October. Need a sample idea to get your creative juices flowing? Consider ‘The Pipeline’.
A special thanks to the long-time volunteer (who will remain anonymous) who came up with this creative and fun idea!

Donor Spotlight: Phil Moshier
Phil Moshier is a long-time supporter of CCFA, going all the way back to 1997 when he first became a member. "My son Mike was diagnosed with Crohn's when he was in 8th grade, and I was fortunate to have two neighbors who happened to be pediatric gastroenterologists: Barbara Kaplan and Bill Michner. They were incredibly helpful, and referred me to CCFA. I first got involved by attending educational meetings to learn more about Crohn’s disease. Barbara also introduced us to Fred Rothstein, who became Mike's gastroenterologist. Mike had an 18 inch resection surgery 3 years later, when he was in 11th grade and, knock on wood, has been in remission ever since."
Phil currently serves as Treasurer of our Board of Directors and Co-Chair of the Golf Tournament. He provides generous financial support for our year-round events and activities, this year including the 24th Annual Golf Tournament, the Northeast Ohio Research Initiative, Movie Gala, and making unrestricted donations - which are the most valuable. In 2003, CCFA honored Phil with the Distinguished Service Award to acknowledge his commitment to CCFA.
Phil is a Certified Financial Planner and a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor. He works as a Private Wealth Advisor with Sagemark Consulting. We would like to thank Phil for his ongoing commitment and leadership of CCFA and as well as his generous contributions - which help us provide mission-critical programs.
CCFA is looking for a few good volunteers to….
- Be a part of our cheer squad at Take Steps Akron. Join us at 4:00pm on October 1st at Lock 3 Park in Akron to cheer on our walkers. Pom poms will be provided! Please email Katie: firstname.lastname@example.org if you are available.
- Provide office support with assembling patient packets, delivering materials to G.I. offices, and administrative support. Please email Terri: email@example.com if you are interested.
- Join the Movie Gala Committee to help plan this new event to be held December 8th at the Capitol Theatre. Please email Terri: firstname.lastname@example.org to learn more or join the committee.
- Fill our two open internships: Take Steps Intern and Development Intern. If you know an area college student, grad student, or recent graduate who may be interested, please refer them to contact Terri: email@example.com for full position descriptions. Internships are a terrific way to build your resume and gain valuable professional experience.
Take Steps Akron – Just 4 Days Until the Big Event
Currently, we have raised $32,892, which brings us to 60% of our fundraising goal. This is a huge increase over last year’s event and we still have time to spare! Let’s make these final 4 days count. Contact Katie if you need any assistance coordinating fundraising events or email campaigns. A big thank you to all our committee, walkers, and team captains for your fundraising efforts – we couldn’t do it without you.
As many of you already know, we are offering a series of exciting incentives for fundraising leading up to the event – with recent prizes including Italian-themed basket of goodies courtesy of Earth Fare and a Flip Camcorder. Don’t miss out on your chance to win exciting prizes while raising funds to support CCFA’s mission-critical programs.

Free Youngstown Educational Program This November
On Monday, November 7, we will host Understanding Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: What Every Patient Needs to Know. This educational program was very highly received in Akron this summer, and we’re so pleased to be bringing it to Youngstown. Join us at Northside Medical Center, 500 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown. Registration will open at 6:30 p.m., with the program starting at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Rony C. Awaida of Avamar Gastroenterology and Center for Endoscopy will lead the presentation. This event is free and open to IBD patients, family members, caregivers, and anyone interested in learning more about managing Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. We will be hosting our first ever online auction to raise funds to support mission-critical programs from November 1 – 13th, 2011, with a month-long preview during October. This is an opportunity to do your holiday season shopping while supporting CCFA at the same time!

Movie Gala Announcement: To Be Held at the Capitol Theatre on Thursday, December 8th
We will be hosting this event to bring together CCFA supporters in an upscale environment for a brief presentation, social hour with hors d’oeuvres and drinks, and their choice of movies playing in the theater followed by dessert. We are thrilled to be holding this event at the restored Capitol Theatre, built in 1921 and featuring detailed wall murals, classically-inspired architecture, and the atmosphere of the 1920s-era movie palace. Like a year-round film festival, the three-screen Capitol features independent, foreign and documentary films. Mark your calendars now!
