Specific Carbohydrate Diet Meeting: A Parent's Perspective
Seattle Children’s Hospital recently held a symposium on nutrition and diet in IBD with an emphasis on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD). Two outcome studies looking at SCD were presented and lectures discussed the gut microbiome and some theories about how the SCD works. Click here to read an article written by Denise Joffe, parent of a child with Crohn’s, who attended the event. “There is no question that there is interest in nutrition therapy in the management of Crohn’s especially from patients and families. Anecdotal results from hundreds of people with IBD who have been helped by the SCD are extremely encouraging and must be investigated.”
Take Steps Towards a Cure with Hunter
Meet Hunter! Hunter's journey with Crohn's disease began roughly five years ago when he was just 3 years old, and the CCFA has been very important to Hunter and his family during those years. Last year was the first year for Hunter’s family to join the Alaska Take Steps, and their team The Kinard Komandos raised $3,500 to help fund education and research into improved treatments and eventually a cure for those that suffer from Crohn’s and colitis! This year Hunter, continues to take steps in support of CCFA and is raising awareness as our Honored Hero for Anchorage, Alaska.
You can join Hunter in his efforts to raise funds and awareness for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis by joining a Take Steps walk in your area! Register for a walk at www.cctakesteps.org.
Team Challenge Changing Lives One Hero at a Time
In many ways, Ayla is like any other two year old: she loves to play, cuddle, and be tickled. However, she also consumes her food through a gastrostomy tube, gets a medication that suppresses her immune system, vomits at least once a day, and often cries when she has a bowel movement.
Ayla has been battling Crohn’s disease since she was six months old. At that young age, she endured chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloody stools, and mouth ulcers. She was too weak to breastfeed. All tests pointed to Crohn’s. Ayla’s doctors were baffled they had not seen Crohn’s in a child that age. She is still the youngest patient her GI doctor sees.
As difficult as it is to live with Crohn’s, Ayla and her family have found the strength to live fully and happily. When Ayla’s mother joined Team Challenge they found a unique support network. The camaraderie that Team Challenge provides and the hope the family gets through fundraising for cures is irreplaceable.
