2013 Karissa ABQPatient Spotlight and Albuquerque's Take Steps Honored Hero

Meet Karissa, this year's Honored Hero for Albuquerque's Take Steps, Be Heard Walk and Festival

"I've come to far to give up now" - Anonymous

I feel strong, I feel alive, I feel healthy, and I feel free.

Has the journey living with Crohn's always been like this? Not for me. I've had my fair share of hospitalizations, poking, prodding, and every test done I never thought would happen before the age of 18. There were the dark times that come with this disease and the thoughts of "when will it ever end?" The side effects of the medications were horrible, sometimes causing hospitalizations and months of recovery. Most days all I could do was hold my head up to get through another day and hope for better.

Hi, my name is Karissa, I'm 29, and I have Crohn's Disease.

I've had symptoms since I was 10, I was diagnosed at 17, and mistreated medically the 10 years following. In 2010, I found wonderful treatment and great doctors at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles, CA. I was told I had a very rare, very severe type of Crohn's. The next 2 1/2 years was like starting over, but it was all worth it. It's how I could start this bio with a statement of hope, strength, health, and happiness. I came to understand my Crohn's as being unique - it's a chronic illness, and there is no cure, but I have so much more in my life than my disease.

I have my faith, my family, my strength, and my hope. I'm stronger than this disease. Sometimes it may not look or feel like it, but I am. I've come too far living with this disease to give up now! Everyday I work to manage my Crohn's through meditation, lifestyle choices, and positive thinking. I've learned to read my body and know my symptoms. To live with a chronic disease happily is a lifestyle that took many many years, but I'm the healthiest and happiest I've been in a very long time. I remind myself every day that I am stronger then this disease, and with love and support everyday is a blessing.

CCFA partners

CCFA Partners Registry

CCFA Partners is working towards improving the quality of life for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) through research and education. Previously, this research was limited to adults, but this month, CCFA Partners is looking to enroll children and adolescents.

Nearly one fourth of individuals with IBD are diagnosed during the childhood or teenage years. Special consideration must be given to pediatric IBD patients who are undergoing rapid physical and mental growth and development. The effects of the disease and treatment in this population need to be better understood.

The goal of CCFA Partners Kids & Teens is to create a long-term community of patients who are engaged in research. This important study will focus on aspects of IBD that are most important to patients and their parents, including health behaviors, disease symptoms, and quality of life. The entire study takes place over the internet.

Whether you're an adult or child with IBD, please consider participating.  By joining, you will not be asked for monetary contributions. We only ask that you complete a short online survey twice a year on your health history.  Sign up here.
