Oh My, How Take Steps Has Grown!
Did you know that the Northwest Chapter’s walk program got its start as the Gotta Have Guts 5K, a volunteer driven fundraising event which began more than ten years ago?
In Portland, this effort was led by the Rask family (pictured above), they organized the very first event and were instrumental in establishing CCFA and a walk program in the Portland community. Today, the Rask family continues to be amazing supporters of the Foundation and Take Steps and has had a record year, raising over $5,000 via the Team Rask walk team. CCFA is very lucky to have an amazing community of motivated and engaged individuals who, like the Rasks, walk with us year after year to raise funds and awareness for these diseases. And because of this incredible support, the Northwest Chapter’s Take Steps walks continue to grow and this year have a combined goal of over $364,000!
Join the CCFA volunteer community and help us reach our goal by walking and raising funds at an upcoming event. Find the walk closest to your home at www.cctakesteps.org!
Show Your CCFA Pride Under the Stadium Lights
Cheer on your Seattle Mariners on August 8th at Safeco Field as they take on the Chicago White Sox! This is a great opportunity to have a family night at the ballgame, a company night out, or just an excuse to cheer on the Mariners under the stadium lights. Don’t miss this annual event in which nearly a thousand CCFA supporters attend each year to show their CCFA and Mariners pride!
Be sure to arrive early and hear long-time Mariners fan and Crohn's patient Mike McCready perform the National Anthem. Also, by purchasing tickets through the link below you can redeem three unique guitar picks at the stadium which feature CCFA, Mike McCready, and the Mariners!
Attention Team Challenge, Take Steps and Flag Football Participants! Put your ticket sales towards your individual fundraising goal by sending an email to Northwest@ccfa.org with the number and type of tickets purchased as well as the participant's name to be credited.
Kids’ tickets are on us! CCFA will provide free tickets for all IBD patients under the age of 18. Email Kathleen at firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange.
A portion of the tickets sold through this offer will benefit the CCFA, but you must buy through the Foundation’s group offer!

4,000 Miles Closer to a Cure
Team Challenge Seattle is half way through the Spring 2014 season with participants getting ready for the Kona Half Marathon in June and the Napa to Sonoma Half Marathon in July. Meeting at different locations around the Puget Sound every week, this local team of runners and walkers has put in over 4,000 training miles! An even more impressive accomplishment: they have raised nearly $60,000 to support mission critical research to find cures for IBD. Q: Are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis caused by genetics?
A: Scientists have identified over 100 genes that increase the risk of developing Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis—confirming that these diseases have a strong genetic component, although environmental factors also are involved. According to researchers, pinpointing the genes that predispose people to IBD could help lead to new ways to treat it. 163 genes associated with IBD have been discovered, but their functions are unknown. Through the Genetics Initiative, we hope to connect the dots of discovery and uncover new opportunities for curing or preventing the onset of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
